The Writing section of the Occupational English Test (OET) presents a unique opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their professional communication skills through the composition of a letter relevant to healthcare contexts. This portion is specifically designed for individuals aspiring to work in various healthcare professions, reflecting real-world scenarios they are likely to encounter. Candidates are allotted 45 minutes to complete this task, which mimics practical workplace situations.
Unlike other sections of the OET, the Writing stage comprises a single task, predominantly requiring candidates to write referral letters for patients. On occasion, candidates might be tasked with drafting transfer letters or letters providing advice. To assist in this process, test-takers receive stimulus materials such as case notes or relevant documentation that must be effectively integrated into their responses.
Responses should ideally fall within the word count of 180-200 words. While no penalties are imposed for exceeding or falling short of this range, brevity may hinder the inclusion of necessary information, whereas excessive length can introduce irrelevant details.
Candidates are afforded five minutes to familiarize themselves with the instructions and case notes before they begin writing, thus having a total of 40 minutes for actual composition. The grading system awards scores from A (highest) to E (lowest). Given the subjective nature of this assessment, each response is evaluated by two examiners who adhere to a detailed grading guide encompassing the following criteria:
- Overall Task Fulfillment
- Appropriateness of Language
- Comprehension of Stimulus
- Linguistic Features (grammar and cohesion)
- Presentation Features (spelling, punctuation, layout)
In cases where discrepancies arise between examiners' scores, a senior examiner will undertake a review to determine the final grade. It is noteworthy that OET administrators have not established a formal passing standard; rather, success is determined by the specific requirements set forth by the relevant professional councils and boards. Generally, candidates aim for a score of at least B to meet typical passing criteria, but it is advisable to consult individual regulatory bodies for precise expectations.
To support candidates in their preparation for the OET writing section, various study resources are available. These self-paced courses include informative videos and practice quizzes to assist in monitoring progress. Additionally, the OET 2.0 Writing Practice app offers a comprehensive overview of the writing test format and provides an excellent platform for honing essential grammar skills necessary for exam success.
